Misinformation on Internet Still Rife

Post by webslave »

I found these words:
Patients with chronic nonbacterial prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome frequently have an occult bacterial infection.
That's from the American Family Physician website (http://www.aafp.org/afp/20000515/3015.html). It's completely wrong, but there it is.

If you do a Google search on the word "prostatitis", the entire first page of hits takes you to websites that promote the idea of bacterial etiology, including the Prostatitis Foundation, Feliciano in Manila, Guercini in Italy, and Polacheck in Tucson. The only site offering an alternate viewpoint, and one more in line with modern research, is https://www.ucpps.men . However, because of the way Google works (by rewarding sites that link to each other, like the Prostatitis Foundation and the Manila/Tucson bunch), https://www.ucpps.men is at the bottom of the page, so not many men get to it before becoming completely convinced they are infected.

I find it a little discouraging that people are finding it so difficult to accept modern research and update their thinking to incorporate these findings. I suspect it's because these people (PF, various doctors) are simply catering to the masses, who still believe they are infected and want to read about that. Follow the money.
